Look Up Look Down is a new collection of work from Montreal artist Jaynus O’Donnell. Her practice uses collage, painting, and installation to examine representations of discovery, exploration and the na...tural world. She regularly works with found paper materials including textbooks, field guides, posters, maps, and encyclopedias.

Jaynus received her BFA from the University of British Columbia and her MA from Concordia University. She has lived and worked in Montreal for the past six years. Her work has been shown in artist-run centres and galleries throughout Canada and the U.S.
She is currently fixated on outer space and soup.

Based on the success of our kids crafts afternoons the last 2 years, we would like to offer 4-week Art & Crafts classes for kids during January & February.

Classes will run from January 14th - February 5th. Come warm up with us and make some art!

Saturday mornings 10:30 - 11:30 is for 2 - 4 yr olds with a parent
Sunday mornings 10:30 - 11:30 is for 5 - 8 yr olds (on their own)

Candice Tarnowski is an artist and art conservator based in Montréal. She holds a MFA in Sculpture from Concordia University (2007), a BFA in Fibres from the Alberta College of Art & Design (1999), and a diploma in Cultural Resource Management from the University of Victoria (2009). Candice has set up homes and participated in residencies in North Carolina, Holland, Hungary, the Maritimes, and the sub-Arctic. She makes objects, photographs, drawings, and installations that are based in concerns with the ‘orderly’ and openness/chaos. Her work is an articulation of being/living as art -cooking, eating, making, building- the deliberation of a task, an awareness of what surrounds us, and taking nothing for granted.

2taiko micro-concert this sunday at 2 pm !!

2taiko are Yumi Célia and Alison Roe and 2 (or 3) taiko - large, beautiful Japanese drums.

Yumi started playing taiko growing up in Tokyo, in a local group based at the shrine of Nezu, and Alison began drumming in Scotland, touring full-time with the UK's leading taiko group. After playing for several years in different taiko groups in Montréal, they did a (very) small show together in a Mile End café in late 2010 and this was the beginning.

Yumi and Alison combined their different taiko styles to develop a varied set of original pieces, and now perform regularly in diverse venues across Montréal. They enjoy the challenge of playing as a duo and the versatility and mobility that affords, in working with other musicians and performers, and in taking their taiko to unlikely corners of the city (so far only once having the police called on them).

Taiko's an exhilarating art form, visually and musically powerful, and 2taiko have a refreshingly expressive and naturally vivacious style.

Immediate Productions is the video production company of Jen MacIntyre and Jesse Bochner. Jen is a Montreal videographer that studied at Concordia and currently makes artsy documentaries. She's worked as a docent at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, as a freelance curator for Galerie Monastiraki and the Osheaga Arts and Music festival. Jesse is an artist and video editor who has 18 years of experience in the film Industry including working as a stage hand on the Mr. Dress up Show for the CBC! Our current project is the Postage Stamp Video series featuring short biographies of artists.

Donna Akrey - 'phew'

Donna Akrey is an artist and educator living in Montreal. She is also one of our favorite people and we are very pleased to present her work here at Monastiraki. She will be exhibiting video work, photography, sculpture and installation. We are also happy that she is the first artist we've hosted to seriously interact with all the doodads and thingamabobs that litter our space !

an exclamation of relief used to express fatigue, surprise, disgust, disbelief, weariness, tiredness, etc.

I am interested in the parts that make up a 'whole'. I see my job as somewhat of a 'wrangler', aware of the futility of the 'ultimate' and the contradictions and idiosyncrasies therein. I use an interdisciplinary approach to articulate ideas to create large installations and sculptural objects, single channel video, video installation and book works.

I believe knowledge is relative and fallible rather than absolute and certain and I endeavor to discover the richness in between intention and result. Utilizing common, surplus and discarded materials such as foam, concrete, found objects, junk mail, wood, rubber and household products etc., I create both large installations and sculptural objects. I think of some of my sculptures and installations as gigantic understatements, ruminations on the spectacle of the unspectacular.

A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE

- British Proverb

NO MATERIAL MUST LIE IDLE

- Make Do and Mend, 1943

It is a practical thing to renovate clothes and household linens and to practice proper storage, cleaning and pressing methods to extend their lives. This course will present techniques intended to help participants get the last possible ounce of wear out of their clothes and household things. Darning, patching, storage and laundering techniques will be covered through discussion, demonstrations and examining finished examples. As Hugh Dalton said, “No doubt there are as many ways of patching or darning as there are of cooking potatoes”. With this in mind we will experiment, innovate and interact with one-another toward taking great delight in the process of mending.

Please bring at least 2 (textile) mending projects to work on, a pair of sharp sewing and/or embroidery scissors, straight pins, a few needles and a pin-cushion. Some materials will be provided. If you have specific complimentary or contrasting fabrics, threads, yarns, flosses, etc. you would like to use to mend your items, please bring them as well. Basic hand-sewing skills are an asset.

Candice Tarnowski is an artist who works with drawing, sculpture, photo and textile processes to produce objects and installations. Her work concerns itself with repetitive gestures located in handwork and domesticity and the experience of being as a process of layering and folding. Her work has been shown and produced in residencies throughout North America and Europe. She holds a BFA in Fibres and MFA in Sculpture and has taught at Concordia University, Penland School of Crafts and the Alberta College of Art & Design. THE GIRLS PROJECT

Ages: 15 – 18 years

Led by artist Emilie O’Brien, co-owner and resident of Monastiraki, this workshop is for young women who are passionate about making art and learning to express themselves. The main goal of this project is to facilitate a creative, open learning space where girls can come to talk, listen and learn together towards fun and confident expression.

Several prominent women artists from Montreal will participate as guest animators throughout the workshop, providing examples of the wide variety of ‘making art’ that is possible. Through this exciting opportunity to meet and learn from these artists, and by talking about and experimenting with different techniques, we will learn how to work from our guts, our hearts, our hands and our heads. Meeting once a week for six weeks, the project will be followed by a small exhibit of the artwork on the walls of Monastiraki.

About the Instructor:

A collector of textiles and words, Emilie O’Brien’s art practice includes painting, sculpture, video and embroidery. Through these fabric scraps and slow processes of making, she investigates the physicality we live in as more than mere substance. How we exist against a city, the processes we use to find time and space, our need for each other, how words can carry and hold – these are the ideas that guide her. Emilie has created and given many workshops for teen girls, as well as for children and adults.

With Billy Mavreas, she runs Monastiraki, an art & curiosity shop in Mile-End.

Creative Collaborative Workshop with Billy Mavreas

During this 4-week course, work with Billy Mavreas in a collaborative round table process of art creation. Mavreas will guide a small group of adults through a journey that will investigate the accidental, challenge personal and creative boundaries and explore concepts that art is only for artists. Sessions will involve drawing, looking and re-looking using the most basic of materials. Collage, mixed media and experiments with text & sequence will also be employed. With Mavreas as a creative, engaging and accessible guide, find yourself opening up to the possibilities of your own inner creative talents. Non-artists and those who have given up on making stuff (but always secretly loved doing so) are especially encouraged to sign up.

Billy Mavreas is a Canadian artist living in Montreal, Quebec, whose work revolves around the themes of language and spirituality. He is a co-founder of Expozine, one of Canada's largest and most well respected Small Press & Zine Fairs, as well as a resident-at-large of Monastiraki, a shop and gallery of wonders in Mile End, where the workshops will take place. Mavreas' passionate, childlike sense of wonder and play has positioned him as a community conduit within many arenas for years now. This year Brian Damage will bring his four hour ambient musical experience, Discipline X, to our hallowed halls !

Discipline X is the solo project of Brian Damage, ex-Phycus, ex-Unireverse. The projet was started in 2000 as Phycus was ending. One CDr was released at that time.

Discipline X was revived in 2009. A new download, “Futuric”, was released, based on the live set of the fall of 2009.

An excerpt from Brian's statement about this project :

"When Sun Ra met John Cage, the one thing they agreed upon was that the most important musician trait was discipline. No matter what style of music a musician performs, successful musicians must be devoted to their craft. Sun Ra planned a series of 100 “Discipline” recordings, and eventually recorded far more than 100 of them.

John Cage often composed based on a set or rules, or disciplines. I am also using a set of disciplines to create this music. For the first CD, for example, the rules included that each track must be comprised of several loops running out of phase with each other, there must be minimal human intervention in the creation of the loops, and that each track needed to be exactly 10 minutes long."

It's an honour for us to host this wonderful event, celebrating what is now a Montreal cultural institution - the Distroboto. For those of you who don't know what a Distroboto is, you're missing out on a fantastic and fun way of getting affordable art by some great Montreal artists. With selections for $2 a pop, these are cigarette machines that have been turned into small galleries, with choices ranging from new music to little screen-printed, editioned books.

A collection of artworks from several long-participating artists will fill this exhibition, which runs until Feb 27th.

THE NAME: "The little death," that gorgeous moment that juxtaposes suspense, tension and relief just after the release of a really good orgasm.

" Guy Bérubé's vision for La Petite Mort is truly - and perhaps surprisingly, given the gallery's name - a vision of social ethics. He sees the artist's struggle with self-awareness through visual art reflected back to the viewer not as passive recipient but as active participant in the creative endeavour. A signature feature of LPM is the feeling of discomfort many of the artworks evoke, which, as is the goal of subversive art, reflects the viewer's personal projections back upon herself. This discomfort is a necessary part of Bérubé's aesthetic and ethical sensibility. It recognizes the role of art in alienation and in critical transformation, for cultural progress is usually provoked by the ideas invoked at the boundaries of our communities. LPM artists represent subjects at the margins of contemporary Canadian urban society - the sublime as well as the homeless and the schizophrenic - no different than most mainstream art since the post-Renaissance period. Not here to shock nor to entertain, however, M. Bérubé as LPM gallery owner and director is here to provide an inclusive forum for today's Canadian artists, including those typically sidelined by mainstream society and those simply unable to function normally within it. We are proud to be exhibiting a selection of artists we carry at Ottawa's La Petite Mort Gallery, for the month of August. The show looks excellent, and we invite anyone who will be in Ottawa to drop by the Gallery and have a visit; it's located at 306 Cumberland Street. We will be there Friday August 6th, for the vernissage.

The show is by way of a Gallery-trade, so that La Petite Mort will be invading Monastiraki in-kind, for the month of October. We had a sneak peek at some of the works coming our way, and can report the show will be equal parts freakish, sexy, superbly crafted, and fantastic. We are definitely looking forward to it!

Harvesting the image from the recycling bin and collected ephemera, we'll recombine signifiers, colours and textures into new landscapes of design. This evening is great for anyone wanting to stretch their creative muscles and play. All materials are provided, all you need to bring is a sense of fun and a desire to make. Both Emilie and Billy will be present.

Mixed Media & Craft for Girls
7 – 11 yrs
Thursdays 1:30 – 3:00 pm
This weekly course with Emilie is a fun, mixed-media art class that will introduce girls to the work of some unique contemporary female artists, while engaging in assemblage, sculpture and picture-making projects. Students will learn skills such as sewing, embroidery, composition, and collage, with finished projects to bring home.
Participants must pre-register for 2-week blocks, with a new project beginning every 2nd week.

Creative Collaborative Roundtable

Work with Billy Mavreas in a collaborative round table process of art creation in this one evening course. Mavreas will guide a small group of adults through a journey that will investigate the accidental, and explore and challenge concepts that art is only for artists. Each session will involve a few hours drawing, looking and re-looking using the most basic of materials. With Mavreas as a creative, engaging and accessible guide and facilitator, find yourself opening up to the possibilities of your own inner creative talents. Non-artists and those who have given up on making stuff (but always secretly loved doing so) especially encouraged to sign up.

A little about us :

Instructor Billy Mavreas is king of collecting and making cool stuff from scraps. He loves drawing, making books and is most known for his abstract and silent comics. He is co-founder of Expozine, Montreal’s zine and small press fair, and is the Proprietor and resident-at-large of Monastiraki.

Instructor Emilie O’Brien is an artist who uses textiles, scraps and words as a large part of her practice. She is also an art restorer, and a partner-in-crime at Monastiraki. She has taught art to children and adults in several venues, and as a big sister, has had lots of experience with hanging out and making things.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of October the cat. Otherwise known as Dr. Octopus, DocOc, Toby, Toblerony, the Tobinator and Tobes, he was a beautiful soul who brightened our store and home. October loved early morning conversation, plastic bags and chicken almost as much as people, hanging out during store hours, openings and concerts, always with a keen nose for a sandwich tucked in someone’s bag. Long time resident of Andy Brown’s Conundrum Towers before moving to Monastiraki, we feel so grateful to have spent the last year and a half of October’s life with him. He was a friend of many, and we miss him very much.

Bob Scott’s CORKLORE exhibit at Galerie Monastiraki will feature vibrant, complex cork carvings of grotesque and fantastical creatures from a wide variety of global folklore. Among others, these will include carvings of a Griffin, a Cockatrice, Krampus, and a decapitated unicorn unlike any you’ve seen before!

Cementcles, a signed limited edition skatedeck designed by Bob Scott for Montreal’s Valoiz Boardz, will also be on hand.

Using recycled wine corks and found objects, Bob Scott’s focus on Halloween Folk Art and Tiki Cork Carvings has earned him a reputation as a truly innovative contemporary artist. … and what year it was! As many of you know, Monastiraki has been undergoing quite a facelift. It truly began a couple of years ago, with the hard work of Jen and Billy clearing out the front 3rd of the store for what is now the Gallery.

This work picked up again in the past year, with a steady distillation of ideas and things (so many things!) – so that we can now proudly say we are a magical curio shop, art gallery, and community hub. We still carry strange and wonderful objets trouvés, and now an ever-changing selection of art - most of which is made by local artists we know and love. Our fun vernissages were testaments to the calibre of work and the supportive people in this community.
Summertime saw several amazing music shows as a part of our new Sunday afternoon micro-concert series; and children and adults attended workshops where they walked away with craft and art projects to be proud of.

Thank you to all of our supporters – we appreciate your return visits, conversations and warm smiles. Our community is essential in making us what we are.

Stay with us through 2010, as we continue to fine-tune our project that is Monastiraki.

James Kochalka, of Burlington VT has a large cult following for his idiosyncratic comics and graphic novels as well as for his quirky, dynamic music. His comics have been nominated for multiple prestigious awards, winning the Ignatz four times and the Harvey once. His paintings and drawings have been exhibited around the world. His books include American Elf, Monkey Vs. Robot, and the children's series Johnny Boo. Also a rock and roll star, his most recent album, Digital Elf, was recorded in the 8bit music style using a GameBoy Advance. He will be performing songs from the album at the exhibit.

This is an exhibit of very little paintings... all are 2 x 2 inches in size... of cats and aliens and strange little creatures. It's the tender kind of cute, never the cloying kind. There's a depth of humanity to the creatures. Cute, but with soul.

"The reason I paint small, inexpensive paintings is because I believe very strongly that everyone needs real art in their homes. Most of my buyers are young people without a lot of money, and this is the very start of their art collections. I'm proud of that."

as an artist i have the need to exercise and explore my inner self on a daily level. there are at least a dozen new drawings by noon every day. with no day off. it is a kind of solitude yet absolute drive to create. corpusse seldom meets skull studio and vice versa. it is important the two entities do not merge because they are separate works. in this show daily ritual one tends to see and feel the skull which i believe is part of the cage to the soul. like it or not we all have one. enjoy.

Perhaps like me you've always been intrigued by the art of silkscreening but couldn't bring yourself to invest the necessary time, space and money. Still, you dream of making your own graphic shirts. You still have hankerings of personalizing your own pillowcases. You long for pants like no one else....

This workshop will introduce you to the easy wonders of freezer paper stenciling. Learn how to make a professional looking transfer image that will withstand repeated washings and envious looks for a fraction of the price of silkscreening. Make your own design, or waffle through the selection of images and lettering that will be provided at the workshop to make your own original design!

Please register beforehand in order to make sure enough supplies are gathered.

Please note that registration closes two days before each workshop (Monday, August 24th, 2009).

All ages! Cost is $6 for adults / $3 for children.

Everything required to make your stencils as well as transferring your images will be provided (variety of silkscreening paint colours, brushes, pieces of cloth on which to practice). Snacks and iced tea will also be provided (feel free to bring your own cup!)

The musical dimensions of Jordi Rosen and Jackie Gallant will be available for your listening pleasure as they both perform sets on Sunday, August 23rd at 3pm.

Superfine and Sweet Jackie and Annabelle Chvostek will be guesting on Jordi's songs.
Jackie will be playing synth and Annabelle will be accompanying on vocals, mandolin and guitar before she leaves town. Jordi will be playing Casio and accordion with vocals.

CRAFT-AFT Workshop No. 2 – Knotty Fun!
Wednesday, July 29th at 3:00pm at Monastiraki

You might know how to knot a tie, but can you tie a knot? Mastering an assortment of knots (as well as understanding their purposes) was common knowledge among the general population of not so long ago. You can do a lot of things with just a handful of knots…

This workshop will explain the basis of knot making and a variety of useful knots while using a selection of materials. Learn how to make a knot that will not budge, and one that will be solid but relatively easy to untie. Discover the basic knots of macramé. Fascinate your friends with your knotty knowledge!

Peut-être vous savez comment nouer une cravate, mais savez-vous nouer un nœud?
Il n’y pas si longtemps, la connaissance des nœuds (ainsi que leur utilité) était répandue parmi la population générale. Que de choses peuvent être faites à partir de quelques nœuds !

Cet atelier vous en expliquera la base et vous démontera une variété de nœuds utiles en utilisant des matériaux différents. Apprenez comment faire un nœud indénouable et un qui est solide mais relativement facile à défaire. Découvrez les nœuds à la base du macramé. Charmez vos amis avec vos « nœudvelles» connaissances.

S'il vous plaît, pensez à vous inscrire au plus tard 2 jours avant l'atelier, soit le lundi 27 juillet 2009 afin que nous puissions rassembler le matériel requis.

CRAFT-AFT WORKSHOP No. 1 - God's Eye
Wednesday, July 15th at 3:00pm at Monastiraki

Ojo de Dios, also known as god's eyes, were traditionally made as a protective talisman for new-born Huichol children. A simple craft ("process art") that binds the maker to their own spiritual representation, they are easy enough for small children and small hands to make. Everyone can take advantage of the endless creative possibilities.

This workshop's focus will be on how to make your own god's eye by incorporating every-day household objects such as chop sticks, knitting needles and bobby pins. Learn how to weave simply by recycling various materials such as bedsheets, plastic bags, t-shirts and even weeds!

L'ojo de dios, ou oeil de dieu, était traditionnellement fabriqué comme talisman protecteur pour des nouveaux-nés mexicains huichol. Les yeux de dieu sont des réalisations simples ("art par processus") qui relient le créateur à ses propres représentations spirituelles. Parfaits pour les jeunes enfants et les petites mains, ils offrent de nombreuses possibilités créatrices à tous.

Cet atelier vous montrera comment fabriquer un oeil de dieu en utilisant des objets de tous les jours, comme des baguettes chinoises, des aiguilles à tricoter ou des pinces à cheveux. Apprenez comment tisser en recyclant des matériaux tels que des draps, des sacs de plastique, des t-shirts et même des mauvaises herbes!

Artist and Monastiraki enthusiast Darren Pasemko has on occasion scolded me on my dreadful documentation practices here at the ol' monastery.
He has decided to try and drop by every week or so and take a few pictures of an object he feels needs a bit more exposure.
This week Darren chose a bunch of old pencils crammed into a pot. He calls it Pencil Tee Pee and I don't disagree.

Creative Collaborative Workshop with Billy Mavreas - Summer Session
For adults of all ages
Sundays June 14, 21, 28 and July 5
6:30 to 8:30 pm
$60 for whole session. The fee covers all supplies.

During this 4-week course, work with Billy Mavreas in a collaborative round table process of art creation. Mavreas will guide a small group of adults through a journey that will investigate the accidental, and explore and challenge concepts that art is only for artists. Each session will involve a few hours drawing, looking and re-looking using the most basic of materials. With Mavreas as a creative, engaging and accessible guide and facilitator, find yourself opening up to the possibilities of your own inner creative talents. Non-artists and those who have given up on making stuff (but always secretly loved doing so) especially encouraged to sign up.

Billy Mavreas is a Canadian cartoonist and artist living in Montreal, Quebec, whose mostly silent or wordless comics revolve around the themes of language, sexuality and spirituality. He is the co-founder of Expozine, one of Canada's largest and most well respected Zine Fairs, as well as the curator and resident-at-large of Monastiraki, a shop and gallery of wonders in Mile End. Mavreas' passionate and enchanting childlike sense of wonder and play has positioned him as a community conduit within many arenas for years now. His creative enthusiasm and relaxed, open nature make him the perfect person to help unlock the artistic potential in others.
