New Drawing Billy Mavreas

I have made 12 new drawings, larger than usual, 20 x 26 inches. Mixed media.

You know when you go to a friend or relatives house and they have this jar full of pens and pencils and markers and half of them are dead and you test each one out to see if they work and then you make a drawing out of those tests? Well this is like that.

Thursday 30 May, from 6 until 9 pm

Graham Hall - Secret Work / Travail Secret

GRAHAM HALL
SECRET WORK / TRAVAIL SECRET

In the course of a conversation we once had about the struggle for creative recognition, Billy Mavreas said to me “... why toil in obscurity, when you can work in secret?”. His clever reversal has stuck in my mind ever since.

This exhibition is a selection of work completed since 2016. Over the last two years or so I have squirrelled myself away in a small studio in Little Italy, and it has felt like working in secret. The building in which I have my studio is not one of those classic hives of creative endeavour, and I have often found myself the only person there. It has been isolating but in a good way. It has allowed me to retreat from the noise of the broader world, to focus on free experimentation and larger scales, and to fail from time to time.

The work on show at Monastiraki is somewhat transitional, moving between my previously exhibited paintings and those which I am currently developing. They are concerned largely with formal elements and principles like colour, shape and harmony, leavened with disruptive moves and veiled passages. There is a mystery to them and sometimes they seem to float. Their titles reflect an abiding interest in history and poetics, and through them, the canvases evoke elusive meaning in the hard reality of now.

GRAHAM HALL
SECRET WORK / TRAVAIL SECRET

Heidi Daehler

Montreal artist Heidi Daehler works in oil and acrylic paint to create representational works that situate human subjects and landscapes in emotional or existential contexts. Daehler has exhibited her works in solo and group shows in and about Montreal, and has completed dozens of commissioned paintings for commercial clients. Her works can be found in numerous private collections across Canada and the U.S., and in the U.K., France, and Mexico. Daehler holds a BFA in Studio Arts and a BA in Psychology (Concordia, 2006 and 1997).

Anthony Easton - i will never live up to my blue china

Anthony Easton
- i will never live up to my blue china

Vernissage Thursday 11 May 6 - 9pm
Exhibit 11 - 31 May 2017

I keep thinking about the problems of the decorative, the queer history of the same, and how much writing has taken place about the problem blue in the last 30 years--especially Maggie Nelson's book Bluet's--but also a wide variety of readings on Goethe's colour work, Derek Jarmon's film Blue, and William Gass' essay "On Being Blue". I have also been making cyanotypes for a while, and thinking about Victorian science. I am also thinking about other kinds of decorative beauty. The altar of worship, the altar of beauty, and the ongoing problem of abstraction are all part of this installation.

The piece will have 46 cyanotypes (one for each of the years Wilde lived) of liillies (Lily for it's queer and decadent history, and ironically because it is the symbol of the virgin Mary, whose colours were blue).

Todd Stewart - Shield Country

Todd Stewart
Shield Country

Vernissage jeudi 6 octobre
expo 6 - 30 octobre, 2016

Todd Stewart : I'm an illustrator and a printmaker. The works in this show are all printed, and are compositions drawing heavily on illustration, either directly on wood or paper, with varying levels of abstraction. The silkscreen process allows me to work automatically, exploring symbol, transparency and light by printing multiples of simple elements and patterns. The work on display was created in the last two years, which includes time spent on residency in Scarborough, Ontario and Saint-Louis, Senegal. Much of it is about landscape and meaning in the symbols in the spaces around us.

Arranging Flowers
NEW PICTURES
BY JG

Eye rationale.

Leaning from this stoop into the imaginary arms of Booger Brie, considering how we are formed or influenced by the people and immersive situations we find ourselves in. Arranging Flowers is an installation of screenprinted paper, drawings in frames and paintings responding to the affairs of what and what and what our painted eyes are paying attention to, when there is so much to tend to.

JG is a queer, mostly self-taught visual artist who lives in Montreal. They have been dramatically influenced by anti-aesthetic theory and experimental print based work, underground comics and small press book culture and participate in making art through this lens. You can find them working as a human photocopier at Atelier Lost Cause in the plateau, or listening to mutant disco recordings while tending to the garden growing inside their apartment, as the plant lady.

Thank you ♥

*Works by JG (TINDRUMS) as well as a set of collaborative posters made with illustrations by Brie Moreno (BOOGER BRIE, from Toronto, ON).

Jason Gillingham - RADIUS

We are very excited to launch our 2016 exhibition season with Jason Gillingham. Jason is an artist with a varied practise, making visual poetry with text and tape as well as
working with all manner of found metal strapping to create exquisite weavings, often embellished with punched text. These weavings act as binding between the more ephemeral qualities of language and the undeniably tactile.

The opening will be on Thursday, March 3rd from 6 pm until 9pm. The exhibit continues until the 27th of March 2016.

We hope to see you there !

WLLDDZZY: BMP FLOWERZ

In this exposition we are featuring Jaquard woven tapestries. They are studies in fabric design. More specifically they deal with small variations of bitmap tessellations and the potential of describing tone and living shapes within.

Emma Senft - Casting November 2013

-------------------

Emma Senft focuses her art practice around drawing, sculpture and print. She earned her BFA from NSCAD University in 2011, and has exhibited within Canada as well as in the United States and Scotland. Emma currently lives in Montreal, where she is making objects and images, and obsessively pickling, preserving and fermenting food.

This exhibition presents two parallel series started in spring 2012. Begun as process based drawing, the work explores function, decoration and stylization in art. This work reflects my curiosity for surface, texture and material, and an extension of drawing beyond line and paper.

The work that inspires me is often subtle, slow and elegant. It requires patience and time from the viewer, rather than coming forward and giving too much away. I make work that is intricate, sparking curiosity in the viewer.

♥ The Moved & The Shook ♥ 100 drawings by Sherwin Sullivan Tjia !!

♥ The Moved & The Shook ♥
100 drawings by Sherwin Sullivan Tjia hand-picked from ten years of sketchbooks

Wednesday October 2, 2013 - Sunday, October 27, 2013

Vernissage:
Wednesday, October 2, 2013
6 - 9 PM

♥ ARTIST STATEMENT:

For ten years I carried a sketchbook around in my pocket. It was always the same kind of sketchbook. It was about an inch thick and had the rough dimensions of a postcard. "Opens flat!" the cover sticker boasted. And over ten years I filled thirty of them.

Mostly I filled them with drawings of folks on the bus. I took a bus everyday to my job up the hill and instead of reading or smartphoning I drew my daily companions on that ride.

You really get to know someone when you draw them. You get to like them, even if they look like a mean sort of person. A funny thing that happens when you run your pen along their faces like you're a blind person trying to get a picture of them in your mind. You grow fond of the particularities of a person's features.

One time I was on the street and I see this guy walking by me and I recognize him but don't know how I know him and then I remember I drew him on the bus a couple days ago. For a moment I consider stopping him and showing him the drawing I have of him in my book but then I thankfully come to my senses and don't say anything.

I get really self-conscious when the person beside me starts showing an inordinate interest in my drawing. They often look at my drawing and then look at the person and then back again, to make comparisons between my drawing and real life.

The rise of the smartphone was a great thing for me. It's easier to draw someone if they're sitting still, and their razor-sharp focus on the game they're playing or the facebook they're updating or the text that they're typing helps me out a lot.

One of the things I had to get used to was the movement of the bus. It's like being on a rocking boat. You learn when it's a good time to make a line, and when you have to refrain. Only a few times did the bus suddenly jerk or brake and make me wreck a really good drawing.

I don't want folks to know I'm drawing them. Sometimes they notice and then they get all self-conscious and then I stop drawing at once because who needs that kind of scrutiny? Even though they are in a public space, they have a private look on their faces.

This series of drawings are what I consider the best and loveliest from my ten year's harvest.
